Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Cook the penne pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water until al dente, following package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, heat a splash of oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, stirring until the onion softens and turns translucent, about 3-5 minutes.

Cooking

  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Combine the cooked penne with the beef mixture, adding half of the shredded mozzarella. Gently fold to combine.
  • Transfer the mixture into the greased baking dish and spread evenly. Top with remaining mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
