Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then fold in the molasses.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the hot water. Mix until smooth.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack.

Frosting

  • Combine powdered sugar, softened butter, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl. Beat until smooth and creamy.
  • Once the cake has cooled, frost the top generously.
