  • 2 cups heavy cream creates a luxurious texture

  • 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped providing sweetness
  • 1/4 cup butter enriching the dish
  • 1 tsp thyme giving an earthy note

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Generously grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  • Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
  • Stir in the minced garlic, cooking for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • Pour in the heavy cream, thyme, salt, and pepper; gently heat until simmering, then remove from heat.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
  • Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes.
  • Sprinkle half of the sharp cheddar and Gruyère cheeses over the layer.
  • Repeat with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheeses.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  • Allow the gratin to cool slightly, then garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

Ensure even cooking by slicing potatoes uniformly. Taste the cream mixture for seasoning and allow the gratin to sit after cooking for best texture.
