Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until combined.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, fully incorporating each before adding the next, and then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually integrate the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, alternating with milk.
  • Divide the batter into two separate bowls; add red food coloring to one bowl and pink to the other.
  • Layer spoonfuls of the red and pink batter into each cupcake liner, then swirl gently with a toothpick.
  • Bake for 18-20 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Cool the cupcakes in the tin for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Frosting

  • Beat together softened butter and powdered sugar until smooth.
  • Gradually add milk and vanilla extract, mixing until fluffy.
  • Divide frosting into two bowls and color one with red and the other with pink.
